Why it matters

Water problems rarely announce themselves.

Here is what clean water gives back, and what the common problems actually do. Without the scare tactics.

The upside

What clean water gives back.

Appliances

Water heaters that last.

Without scale coating the elements, heaters and dishwashers work the way their warranties assume.

Laundry & fixtures

White stays white.

No orange iron stains creeping across tubs, toilets, and everything in the wash.

Skin & hair

Softer on both.

Soap lathers and rinses clean instead of leaving the film that hard water is known for.

Plumbing

Pipes that age slowly.

Balanced water is not eating your copper. Acidic water, below pH 6.4, corrodes it.

Taste & odor

Water you want to drink.

No metallic edge, no rotten-egg smell announcing itself at the tap.

Confidence

Numbers, not guesses.

A lab report replaces wondering with a page you can read, keep, and re-test against.

The problems

What each one actually does.

Factual, bounded, and each with a well-understood fix. Some you can see and smell. The bedrock ones you cannot.

CA/MG · Hardness

Scale that outlives your appliances.

Not a regulated contaminant: it shortens appliance life and is rough on skin and hair.

FE/MN · Iron & manganese

Orange stains on everything white.

Stains laundry, tubs, and fixtures, and gives water a metallic taste.

H₂S · Sulfur

The rotten-egg announcement.

An odor and taste problem you notice at every tap, with a well-understood fix.

PB · Lead

A goal of zero, per EPA.

Usually enters at the fixture or service line, so city water homes are not exempt. A first-draw sample at the tap is how you measure it.

AS · Arsenic

Natural in Connecticut bedrock.

EPA sets an enforceable limit of 10 micrograms per liter. No taste, no color, no smell.

U · Uranium

From the same bedrock as arsenic.

EPA sets an enforceable limit of 30 micrograms per liter. Invisible in a glass at any level a well produces.

RN · Radon

A gas that rides in on water.

Dissolved radon leaves the water and joins indoor air whenever a tap or shower runs. Aeration removes it at the point of entry.

PFAS · Forever chemicals

Regulated in 2024, still being studied.

EPA set enforceable limits for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion, among the strictest ever set for a drinking water contaminant.

Some homes test fine. The point is not that your water is dangerous; it is that the only way to know which kind of water you have is to test it.
