Why Does My Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?
The smell is hydrogen sulfide gas. Where it forms decides what the fix costs, and the pattern of the smell tells you where it forms.
Water that smells like rotten eggs contains hydrogen sulfide, a gas produced by sulfur reducing bacteria in the well, the household plumbing, or the water heater. Hot water only usually means the heater. Both hot and cold at every tap usually means the well. One faucet usually means that faucet or its drain. The fix ranges from a part to a point of entry filter, and which one you need is settled by where the smell appears, not by guesswork.
What causes the rotten egg smell in water?
Hydrogen sulfide. Sulfur reducing bacteria are ordinary organisms that metabolise sulfur compounds and release the gas as a byproduct, and Connecticut groundwater gives them plenty to work with. They are not the same thing as iron bacteria, which produce slime and staining rather than a strong odor, and the two get treated differently, which is one reason a nose alone is a poor diagnostic.
Where the bacteria live is the whole question, because it decides the fix. They settle in the well's water column, in seldom used branches of household plumbing, and very commonly inside the water heater, where warmth and a magnesium anode rod give them everything they need. These are ordinary organisms doing an ordinary thing: sulfur-reducing bacteria, which are not a regulated contaminant, are a nuisance species with a memorable calling card rather than a line a laboratory reports against a limit.
The human nose registers hydrogen sulfide at parts per billion. That sensitivity is why a smell that fills a bathroom represents a genuinely tiny quantity of gas, and why the smell usually arrives long before anything else about the water changes. It is also why the smell is worth taking seriously as information: something changed in the well, the plumbing, or the heater, and the smell is the first instrument that noticed.
Sulfates in the water are the raw material. CT DPH includes both odor and sulfate in the basic indicator panel it recommends every private well run each year, and lists an applicable drinking water standard for odor of less than 2. EPA separately lists odor as a secondary standard at a threshold odor number of 3, one of the non-enforceable guidelines it publishes to help water systems manage aesthetic considerations such as taste, color and odor. Hydrogen sulfide itself is an aesthetic problem covered by taste and odor guidance, not a regulated contaminant.

Because the water heater is a warm tank with a magnesium anode rod in it, and that combination is close to ideal for sulfur reducing bacteria. The gas is generated inside the tank, which is why it arrives at every hot tap in the house and at no cold one.
This is the cheapest outcome on the list. Swapping the magnesium rod for an aluminium zinc rod usually ends the smell without any whole house equipment at all, and flushing the tank helps in the meantime. If someone proposes a filtration system for a hot water only smell, ask which cold tap they smelled it at first.
Why does the water smell worse after a holiday?
Standing water accumulates gas. After a week with no flow, the first draw carries everything that built up in the tank and the pipes, then the smell thins out as fresh water moves through. A first draw smell that clears within a minute is telling you about storage, not about the aquifer. Run the taps for a few minutes when you get home and note whether the smell comes back the following morning, because that answer is worth more to a diagnosis than a description of how bad it was.
Why does only one faucet smell?
A single fixture smell is a local problem. The candidates are a branch line that gets very little flow, a colonised aerator, or, very often, the drain rather than the water. This is where the sewage smell searches usually land: a shower that smells of sewage when it runs is more often a dry or fouled trap and a biofilm in the drain than anything arriving through the pipe.
There is a two minute test that separates the two. Fill a glass at the fixture, carry it to another room, and smell it there, away from the drain. If the glass smells, the problem is in the water. If the glass does not, the problem is in the drain, and no water treatment system will change it. Do the same at the kitchen tap and at an outside spigot if you have one, because a spigot usually comes off the line ahead of the heater and the softener, which makes it the most honest tap in the house.
Is it the well or the water heater?
Ten minutes of sniffing taps in an organised order replaces a great deal of equipment guessing.
- Hot only, every hot tap, cold taps clean: the water heater, almost certainly the anode rod.
- Hot and cold, every tap, all day, indoors and at the outside spigot: the well or the water arriving at the house. This is the case that justifies point of entry treatment.
- Strong on first draw, gone within a minute, returns overnight: gas accumulating in standing water. Plumbing or heater, not the aquifer.
- One fixture only, and a glass carried to another room does not smell: the drain or the aerator at that fixture.
- On city water rather than a well: the utility treats and monitors at the system, so a persistent sulfur smell at your tap is usually the heater or the household plumbing rather than the supply.
Write down which of those five describes your house before anyone quotes you anything. It is the single most useful sentence you can hand a technician, and it is the same sequence we run when we arrive.
How is hydrogen sulfide measured in a water test?
At the tap, during the visit. Hydrogen sulfide off gasses from a sample quickly, so a bottle that spends a day in transit can read lower than the water in your kitchen actually is. That is why the odor and the related field chemistry are measured on site while the rest of the panel travels to a Connecticut certified laboratory.

A smell is also a good moment to catch up on the rest of the panel. A private well has no utility behind it, so the sampling schedule belongs to the owner, and an odor complaint is the most common reason a well that has not been sampled in years finally gets sampled. For a well source smell, oxidising filtration at the point of entry. Media such as catalytic carbon or manganese dioxide converts the dissolved gas into filterable particles and captures them, backwashing on a schedule. Sizing comes from the measured sulfide level, the pH and the flow rate, which is the same test first logic behind every other recommendation on this site.
For a heater source smell, no filtration at all. An anode rod swap, and a flush. We say so when that is the answer, because selling a system for a problem a part solves is the fastest way to lose the next referral.
Shock chlorinating the well is worth doing once, mostly for the information: how fast the smell comes back tells you whether the conditions that grew the bacteria are still there. It is a diagnostic step rather than a cure, and the odor commonly returns within weeks. And to repeat the categorical rule, because it is the most common mistake in this category: a softener addresses hardness and does nothing for odor. If you are weighing the two, a softener and a filter are not the same machine.

What can you do before treatment arrives?
Run the taps briefly before you use the water, because that clears the gas that accumulated while the house was still. Flush the water heater if the smell is a hot water one. Neither of those is a fix and both wear off, but they make the house comfortable while the diagnosis and the equipment come together, and they cost nothing but a few minutes.
Keep notes while you wait. Which taps, hot or cold, first draw or after a minute, and whether anything changed in the week the smell started. That is the information a visit otherwise has to reconstruct, and it shortens the appointment. Once a system is in, the proof is a post installation test and a smell that is simply gone.
