Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from the ground. It is most common, and usually most severe, on private wells, though some Connecticut municipal supplies run moderately hard too. It is not a health rule violation; it is a maintenance problem, and a very visible one.
What it does
Scale builds up inside water heaters and on fixtures, appliances wear out sooner, soap rinses poorly, and skin and hair feel it after every shower. The damage is slow, which is why it usually gets blamed on the appliances instead of the water.
What fixes it
A properly sized softener ends the scale. Sizing is the whole game: it comes from your measured hardness number and your household's water use, not from a sales chart. We use open-platform equipment (Clack and Fleck heads), so there is no proprietary lock-in on parts or service.
Test first. If your hardness number is low, you do not need a softener, and we will tell you exactly that.
